A sound installation by Hofesh Shechter for one audience member in a completely dark room.
In 2011, Fuel commissioned a series of podcasts from different artists inspired by their favourite everyday moment, designed to be listened to at a particular time and in a particular place.
Entitled: Late night, with headphones, in completely utterly dark room, with some space to move, Hofesh Shechter’s podcast, is designed to be listened to alone, in a dark space, and is an invitation to move without inhibition.
In 2012 we re-imagined the podcast as an installation for Oxford Playhouse studio and since then it has toured to Lakeside Theatre Colchester, South Street Arts Reading and Arena Wolverhampton.
The audience member steps into a room, turns off the light and is in complete darkness. You put on a pair of headphones and follows Hofesh’s hypnotic instructions. In the process, you become lost in yourself with a unique opportunity to connect with and move your body the way you always wished you could when no one is watching.
“Just a generous, thoughtful gift - allowing us the space, time & solitude to be in an intimate space with Hofesh Shechter and this beautiful, caressing, understanding voice.”
Led by Kate McGrath and Louise Blackwell, Fuel produces fresh work for adventurous people by inspiring artists. Fuel is a producing organisation which works in partnership with some of the most exciting theatre artists in the UK to develop, create and present new work for all.
Fuel’s projects with artists are varied in form and content, and happen in all sorts of places: from a spectacular dance event popping up in public spaces around the UK, to a journey across the body of 65 year old lesbian grandmother in medical schools; from a heartfelt celebration of love in village halls, to a street party in Bognor Regis. Current partners include Sadler’s Wells, the Young Vic, Battersea Arts Centre, the National Theatre, the Royal Court, London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), and the Southbank Centre.
